Modern Crescenta Valley practically defines the notion of quiet
suburbia with its lovely homes and tree-lined streets. Yet the
communities that lie north of Los Angeles between the Verdugo and
San Gabriel Mountains once formed a vast, isolated, treeless,
windstorm-swept dell. The settlers who stayed in this valley found
day-to-day subsistence challenging. They farmed, hunted, tried bee
ranching, gathered greasewood, cultivated vineyards and dodged
rattlesnakes. As settlement in the area continued to develop, such
refinements as literature and photography flourished. Join author
Jo Anne Sadler as she brings the Valley's frontier days to life,
recounting such quirks as a visit from a "rainmaker" and the
reasons behind the construction of the gaudy local landmark the
Gould Castle.
Their names run deep through local history and lore, adorning
street signs, canyons, historical buildings, homes and ranches in
the swath of suburbia between Pasadena and Tujunga, where the towns
of La Crescenta and La Ca ada took shape, along with the unique
community of Montrose. Profiled in the pages of Crescenta Valley
Pioneers and Their Legacies by author Jo Anne Sadler, a researcher
and frequent writer for the Historical Society of the Crescenta
Valley, are such singularly important local characters as Theodor
Pickens, the first permanent settler; Dr. Benjamin B. Briggs, the
founder of La Crescenta; Jacob L. Lanterman and Adolphus W.
Williams, the original developers of Rancho La Ca ada; and the Le
Mesnager family, whose historic wine barn still stands in
Deukmejian Wilderness Park.
Pennsylvania's Coal and Iron Police ruled small patch towns and
industrial cities for their coal and iron company bosses from 1865
to 1931. Armed with a gun and badge and backed by state
legislation, the members of the private police force were granted
power in a practically unspecified jurisdiction. Set in
Pennsylvania's anthracite and bituminous regions, including
Luzerne, Schuylkill, Westmoreland, Beaver, Somerset, and Indiana
Counties, at a time when labor disputes were deadly, the officers
are the story behind American labor history's high-profile events
and attention-grabbing headlines. Paid to protect company property,
their duties varied but unfortunately often resulted in
strikebreaking, intimidation, and violence.
Since 1722, Carteret County has withstood invasions by pirates and
the Spanish, been home to Civil War generals and spies, and served
the societal elite with opulent resort hotels. Its rich history has
drawn tourists to the area from the earliest time. Much has changed
since those early days: grand old hotels have succumbed to
hurricanes, passenger and freight trains have nearly vanished, and
once-quiet streets are now lined with cars. The postcards in this
volume capture Carteret County's heritage from the early 1900s
through the 1960s, illustrating its changes and preserving its
history.

Inspiring Children to Pray Big Things to the God Who Loves Them
Christian parents and grandparents want to teach their children to
pray with joy and expectation. What better way to make prayer fun,
natural, and meaningful than to start with a vividly illustrated
picture book to bring vital biblical concepts--like salvation--to
life? You Can Pray Big Things encourages children ages 3-8 to pray
big prayers to their even bigger God. Combining clear, biblical
teaching about prayer, inspiring quotes, engaging illustrations,
and simple prayers children can pray alone or with a loved one,
this accessible book helps kids start a lifelong conversation with
God. It even helps them understand what to do when it seems like
God hasn't answered their prayers, and how to pray to receive
Christ. Praying to God should be a fun and frequent part of every
kid's life. You Can Pray Big Things shows kids how to do it and
helps parents start important spiritual conversations in their
home.
War was Britain’s furnace for two thousand years and we are that
forging. Rome conquered England if not Scotland and imposed
military rule on the north. Saxon raiders, then Vikings and finally
Normans each invaded in turn. England and Scotland spent three
hundred years at war with each other – a very nasty form of
endemic, asymmetric warfare and those scars still linger. Edward
III pursued expeditionary warfare against France and established a
tradition that has since characterised UK military activity, the
projection of force across the globe; most strikingly in recent
times with the Falklands War of 1982. In 1914 Lord Haldane asked
‘what is the Army for?’ Nobody yet has a definitive answer, nor
ever will. All of this experience and the many traditions it has
fostered are preserved in the aspic of our military museum
collections, the broad threads of history and grand strategy but
also the human dimension of individual stories. Author John Sadler,
in the company of Captain Graham Trueman, formerly of 3rd Battalion
the Light Infantry, has visited 50 museums to tell 50 of those
stories. Recent campaign experiences in Afghanistan and emerging
global threats have thrown into stark relief the need to determine
the role of the UK’s armed forces and of its global aspirations
in a world which is both unstable and threatening. To ascertain how
we move forward, we need to understand what went before. The author
has interviewed military figures and museum curators to get to the
truth. Leon Trotsky warned that ‘You may not be interested in
war, but war is always interested in you…’
Uncover the true story of the man who unified medieval Japan. For
700 years, Japan was ruled by military commanders who waged war
against one another incessantly. Shogun tells the fascinating story
of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the man who finally unified and brought lasting
peace to the nation. He established a new central government which
enabled his descendants to rule Japan for the next 260 years--a
period in which Japanese culture as we know it today flourished.
The dramatic episodes retold in this book include: Ieyasu's
crushing victory at the Battle of Sekigahara, the largest battle
ever fought in Japan His creation of a new form of government with
a centralized system of control that allowed his descendants to
rule Japan peacefully for the next 15 generations Ieyasu's fateful
decision to limit the spread of Christianity in Japan, ultimately
banning the religion and massacring tens of thousands of ardent
believers This new edition highlights the drama and pageantry of
Ieyasu's life and features a new foreword by leading Japanese
military historian Alexander Bennett.

It brings together a substantial group of essays by an

dramaturgy and staging. The contents are addressed to a wide
readership, including not only scholars but also practical
musicians, stage directors, dancers and choreographers.
Taking into account the rapid progress in all areas of life that
was made at the turn of the 20th century this volume discusses how
best to educate both sexes, from all social classes, referring to
Greek, Roman and Egyptian education as a starting point.
Tokugawa Ieyasu founded a dynasty of rulers, organized a system of
government and set in train the re-orientation of the religion of
Japan so that he would take the premier place in it. Calm, capable
and entirely fearless, Ieyasu deliberately brought the opposition
to a head and crushed in a decisive battle, after which he made
himself Shogun, despite not being from the Minamoto clan. He
organized the Japanese legal and educational systems and encouraged
trade with Europe (playing off the Protestant powers of Holland and
England against Catholic Spain and Portugal). This book remains one
of the few volumes on Tokugawa Ieyasu which draws on more material
from Japanese sources than quotations from the European documents
from his era and is therefore much more accurate and thorough in
its examination of the life and legacy of one of the greatest
Shoguns.
Originally published in 1966, this volume reappraises the
educational philosophy of Comenius. Until recently the attention
given to Comenius and his work concentrated on a narrow
interpretation of his pedagogy which played down his pansophic
theory. In the second half of the nineteenth century Germany led
the way in pedagogical study and Comenius was widely accepted as
having laid the foundations of a science of education. The
emergence of education as an academic subject in England and the
USA led to a considerable interest in the history of educational
ideas and Comenius' work.
The 2014 Scottish independence debate and the re-ignition of the
SNP’s call for a second vote in the wake of Brexit - and indeed
Brexit itself - begs a reappraisal of what nationality and borderer
identity actually mean in the twenty-first century and how the past
affects this. As a borderer and historian John Sadler is uniquely
qualified to examine the border from Roman times to today. He’s
been in these Marches all his life, read about their wild
inhabitants, traversed every inch and studied every castle, bastle,
tower and battlefield. In July 2010 in Rothbury, a latter-day
outlaw, Raoul Thomas Moat, a vicious petty criminal and murderer,
holed up in Coquetdale as hundreds of police tried to flush him
out. Nasty as he was, he became a kind of instant folk hero to
some. Four centuries ago, Moat would barely have been noticed on
the border - just another Reiver. From the Hammer of the Scots,
William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Mary, Queen of Scots, right
through to today’s new nationalism, the story of the borderlands
is tempestuous, bloody and fascinating. And a ‘Hot Trod’? If
your cattle were stolen there was a legal requirement to pursue the
rustlers within six days, otherwise you’re on a less enforceable
Cold Trod.
This volume explores adult work-world writing issues from the
perspectives of five seasoned professionals who have logged
hundreds of hours working with adults on complicated written
communication problems. It examines the gap between school-world
instructional practices and real-world problems and situations.
After describing the five major economic sectors which are writing
intensive, the text suggests curricular reforms which might better
prepare college-educated writers for these worlds. Because the
volume is based on the extensive work-world experiences of the
authors, it offers numerous examples of real-world writing problems
and strategies which illustrate concretely what goes wrong and what
needs to be done about it.

Pandemic Economics applies economic theory to the Covid-19 era,
exploring the micro and macro dimensions of the pre-pandemic,
pandemic, and post-pandemic phases. Using core economic tools such
as marginal analysis, cost-benefit analysis, and opportunity cost,
this book explores the breadth of economic outcomes from the
pandemic. It shows that a tradeoff between public health and
economic health led to widespread problems, including virus
infections and unemployment. Taking an international and
comparative approach, the book shows that because countries
implemented different economic policies, interventions, and
timelines during the crisis, outcomes varied with respect to the
extent of recession, process of recovery, availability of medical
equipment, public health, and additional waves of the virus.
Pedagogical features are weaved throughout the text, including
country case studies, key terms, suggested further reading, and
discussion questions for solo or group study. On top of this, the
book offers online supplements comprising PowerPoint slides, test
questions, extra case studies, and an instructor guide. This
textbook will be a valuable resource for advanced undergraduate and
postgraduate courses on pandemic economics, macroeconomics, health
economics, public policy, and related areas.
